Ask anyone what my podcast preferences are, they’ll probably tell you it’s a solid tie between horror and true crime. While true, there are days that I need a break from both. That and I just love a good laugh. I mean, who doesn’t? (If you’re someone who doesn’t, well, I hate to tell you this, but you’re reading the wrong blog post.) There’s a long list of comedy podcasts out there, but I’ve chosen five of my personal favourites to share with you this week. Fingers crossed you’ll love them, too!
1) My Brother, My Brother and Me
Just as quirky as they are hilarious, brothers Justin, Travis, and Griffin McElroy are a trio to behold. In what they call an “advicecast for the modern era”, the brothers field questions from listeners and the internet alike every Monday. While their expertise in certain areas might be up for debate, their advice never disappoints. Though, whether you should follow it is questionable at best.
What happens when you combine hipsters, monsters, and commentary on the now? You get Bubble. This seven-episode sci-fi podcast is both smart and funny. The story is set in the present day, but on a planet with a serious monster infestation. Follow protagonist Morgan and her friends as they struggle to make ends meet and find love while kicking monster butt in their nightmarish gig economy.
3) Uncanny County
If it’s possible to have a crush on a podcast, then Uncanny County has my heart. Mixing paranormal elements with dark humour and a hint of “Southwestern-flavour”, this anthology will have you hooked from episode one. While the Uncanny County crew is currently on hiatus, there are plenty of episodes for your listening pleasure. I’m looking forward to what they’re cooking up for Season 3.
I’ll admit that I’ve just started listening to Victoriocity, but it has quickly become one of my favourite podcasts. It has a very steampunk feel and is set in Even Greater London in 1887. The story follows Inspector Archibald Fleet and Clara Entwhistle and they attempt to solve a murder. However, the case takes some wild twists and turns that land them in the middle of an impossible conspiracy. Will they be able to crack the case? Listen now to find out!
5) This Sounds Serious
This scripted comedy takes true crime and spins a parody so believable you could almost believe it was ripped from the headlines. After a famous local Florida weatherman is found dead in his water bed, his awkward twin is at the centre of the investigation as the prime suspect. But, is this case all it’s wrapped up to be or is there more beneath the surface? With cults, boy bands, horses, and mistaken identity involved, I’d say so.
